'''''surface.dat''''' is a GTA data file used to define wheel traction multipliers on different surfaces. The file is used in GTA III, GTA:VC and GTA:SA and it's functionality is similar in all three games.

''surface.dat'' consists of a table of different surfaces (5x5 in GTA III, 6x6 in GTA:VC and GTA:SA) and friction multipliers between these surfaces. It is possible to let the Liberty Unleashed server load a modified ''surface.dat'' and change the surface settings in the game this way. It is also possible to modify these values run-time using the built-in scripting functions. The scripting functions use a list of [[Squirrel/Server/Constants#Surface_Traction|surface constants]] for different surface types. For example, SURFACE_ROAD_RUBBER means the friction multiplier between road (tarmac) and rubber (wheel). Note that the multiplier between road and rubber is the same than the multiplier between rubber and road.
